The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is scheduled for a site-based assessment March 11-14 as part of a four-year process for re-accreditation administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA).

This assessment will verify that the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office maintains national accreditation by confirming compliance with all applicable law enforcement standards. The re-accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations and support services.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office has been accredited since 2013.

According to a press release from the BCSO, “We are very proud to have earned and maintained accreditation for over 10 years. “The program is intended to enhance organization service capabilities and effectiveness, serve as a tool for policy decisions and management, promote transparency and community trust, and establish a platform for continuous review.”

This recognition ensures the agency is adhering to the highest standards in professional policing. As part of the assessment process, agency employees and community members are invited to offer accolades, concerns, comments or questions about the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office accreditation compliance by utilizing the CALEA Public Comment Portal at cimrs2.calea.org/325.

Anyone with questions or who wants a copy of the accreditation standards should call Darleen Maloney-Martin, accreditation manager, at 843-719-4465 or email darleen.maloneymartin@berkeleycountysc.gov.
